This starts on August 24th and runs until September 2nd and there will be music performances throughout the week at various locations in the city. The event focuses on the arts and crafts of Native Americans and around 1000 artists will be taking part, from more than 200 different tribes across the USA and Canada. You get to meet the artists and find out more about the traditions of arts and crafts. The event is organized by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) and you can find out more by visiting the official website.
Zozobra – Burn Him!
This is one of the more unique events in the Santa Fe calendar. It takes place on August 31st each year and is held in Fort Marcy Park. This event involves the burning of an effigy that is 50 feet high called Zozobra. This tradition started in 1924 and the aim is to burn away all doom and gloom to welcome in the new season. The event starts at 7 pm, when there is a pre-show, with music and dancing. The fire is lit at 9.30 pm and runs until the effigy has been completely burned. You can get tickets from July 4th onwards but kids under the age of 10 can go free of charge. Hundreds of people attend this event each year. This is a family-friendly event and it is held close to the city’s historic plaza.
As well as the events mentioned here there are a number of ongoing events that you should consider such as the weekly farmer’s market.
