December in Santa Fe is always very special. While you would expect there to be Christmas lights everywhere, Santa Fe seems to likes to bring the season to a whole new level, adding a series of events to its calendar that ensure that anyone in the city for the holidays is going to have an amazing time that they will not soon forget.
Visit the ballet
Every year the Santa Fe ballet takes one weekend in December to put on special performances of the Nutcracker, a ballet very closely associated with Christmas. This year there are four performances of the ballet spread over December 15 and 16. See the official website for tickets and more details.
As a special part of the religious celebrations of Christmas, anyone can attend Midnight Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. The cathedral is a beautiful building and it is recommended that if you want to attend the mass that you get there early as it is a very popular part of the church’s calendar. The official website of the cathedral will give you more details.
Winter holiday lights
If you visit the botanical gardens during the latter half of December you will be able to see the winter holidays lights event. The lights give the gardens a very festive look with thousands of different lights all around the park. Enjoy live music, a visit from Santa and warming drinks as you explore the park and if you get there early enough you get to enjoy the sunset too. To find out more check out the official website.
Las Posadas is one of the most popular Christmas events in Santa Fe. This is a candlelit procession and takes place in the middle of December every year. This procession is a re-enactment of the Bible story of Mary and Joseph’s search for somewhere to stay in Bethlehem. This year it will take place on December 9. It will start at the Palace of the Governors and finish back in the Palace courtyard where hot drinks and cookies are served.
There is no doubt that this is a special day no matter where you are in the world, but here in Santa Fe, Christmas Eve is a real event. The Canyon Road Farolito Walk is a real festive event with candles and small bonfires used to light the night as you take a guided walk and learn about the traditions of the area from local experts. Some of the houses have opted for small electrical versions of the traditional farolito candles. Enjoy a hot chocolate or even a hot cider as you enjoy the festivities and sing carols into the night. Find out more at the official website.
