There are many people who aren’t aware that there is great skiing in New Mexico! In fact, close to home is Ski Santa Fe, Santa Fe’s very own ski resort, and every year it attracts skiing enthusiasts from all over the country (and other parts of the world!).
New Mexico’s landscape makes visitors think of desert colors and ancient, flat landscapes. Yet Santa Fe is actually nestled into the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
These ‘foothills’ soon turn into mountains and at 12,075 you will experience Ski Santa Fe. A hidden gem, this ski area is only 16 miles from Santa Fe and is one of the most undervalued ski areas in the southwest.
The snow report is in and with an 80″ base and 86 trails open, the ski conditions at Ski Santa Fe are phenomenal.
Ski Santa Fe is a rare gem that has managed to thrive, yet remains under the radar. Skiers experience wide-open spaces and plenty of time skiing, not waiting in lift lines. The vistas atop Ski Santa Fe are unsurpassed and include steep bump runs, powder-filled chutes, gladed tree-skiing, and plenty of groomers.
Family-Friendly Santa Fe Ski
Ski Santa Fe is family-oriented, but those seeking a challenge can find it on this mountain’s trails or some of their backwoods.
Guests can experience western skiing at Ski Santa Fe with over 70 trails and 7 chairlifts. There, you’ll find a base area elevation of 10,350 feet and a chairlift ready to take visitors as high as 12,075 feet. Perfect for a beginner or intermediate skiers, the mountain also features runs that are well-suited for advanced skiers.
20% of which are ideal for beginners, with 40% aimed at the most experienced skiers.
Ski Santa Fe Trails
Ski Santa Fe has trails to suit every level of skier and for those who want lessons, both private and group lessons are available. The littlest skiers ages 4-11 can take part in the mountain’s Chipmunk Corner which includes a lesson, rentals, lunch, and a kids-only ski slope with a conveyor lift.
All in all there are more than 660 acres of terrain in and around the resort for you to ski and explore and this is one of the most beautiful parts of the world. The resort itself dates back more than 30 years with construction beginning in 1985.
In 1987 the resort was host to its first Winter Festival. Almost every year since then the resort has been developed and added to, making it one of the most impressive resorts in the US.
For non-skiers, there is plenty to do in Santa Fe as the region is well known for its art galleries, restaurants, day spas, and museums. For those who are looking for outdoor activities, Outspire Santa Fe provides private, customized hiking tours and snowshoe outings for singles, couples, and small groups.
You might be wondering about that all-important après-ski and if so, look no further. There are more than 200 restaurants in our city, serving cuisines from all over the world or you can relax in the Santa Fe plaza which dates back more than 400 years.
And now with the addition of the RTD bus service, you can reach the resort so much more easily when staying in Santa Fe. The bus picks up at South Capital Rail Runner Station between Cordova Rd. and Alta Vista St. and then makes a few additional stops around and at Fort Marcy Park, just a couple streets over from Inn on the Paseo.
The route takes the bus through the downtown area and along NM 475 until you reach the Ski Basin. To find out more about this service check out the official brochure here.
Inn on the Paseo guests can park free at the Inn and drive up to Ski Santa Fe or take the RTD Mountain Trail Bus from Santa Fe for just $5 each way (bus riders will even receive a $5 token to be redeemed on lift tickets, lessons, restaurants and more at the mountain).
